Meetings

The IEC held fewer technical meetings in 2001, relying instead on the advantages information technology brings in terms of efficiency. This reflects the IEC’s policy of working as much as possible in an electronic environment. In 2001, the Commission completed its move to the electronic-only environment for standards development and administrative processes.

Industry, not national standards bodies, continues to supply the IEC with the vast majority of chairmen and secretaries for the technical committees, demonstrating the IEC’s continuing commitment to industry (see chart).

New TCs

Two new technical committees were created in 2001. The first – TC 108 – covers safety of electronic equipment within the field of audio/video, information technology and communication technology. The second – TC 109 – deals with insulation co-ordination for low-voltage equipment.

The IEC established an online graphical database that customers can access directly and quickly. Most of the IEC 60617 series of standards, dealing with graphical symbols for diagrams, is now immediately available through the IEC Web Store. Of even greater significance is that this is also a resource for experts that they can develop and update online in real time. It is expected that IEC 60417, covering graphical symbols for use on equipment, will follow this route in the near future.

TC and SC meetings

Fewer technical meetings in 2001 reflect greater use of IT and therefore greater cost efficiencies.

TC/SC Officers' Affiliation

Industry’s voice remains preponderant in the IEC, as evidenced by the number of technical committee and subcommittee officers that come from the market, not from national standards bodies.

Production of Publications

Production of IEC publications rose again, reaching 465. In part, this reflects the efficiencies introduced into the standards development process from using IT tools.

TISS

The Technical Information Support and Service (TISS) began operating within IEC Central Office in 2001. With its own dedicated web facility, it is a focal point for support on technical requests from National Committees, TCs and SCs and experts.

IEC and VITA

The IEC and US-based VMEbus International Trade Association (VITA) agreed in March on a method of transforming the latter’s specifications for power connectors for printed boards into IEC Industry Technical Agreements. The potential for development is significant because the agreement links two products that evolve in the fast moving world of computers.

Maintenance
Number of Publications

As signalled by the two graphs – Maintenance and Number of Publications – the IEC focussed less in 2001 on
maintaining existing publications and more on developing new projects.
