IEC standard on safety of IT equipment - new edition
The International Electrotechnical
Commission recently published the third edition of one of its best-selling
publications, IEC 60950 which deals with the safety of information
technology equipment. It replaces the previous edition, released
in 1991. With technology in this industry sector moving at such
a rapid pace, this new version has been greeted positively by the
IEC community of standard users and should be even more popular
than its predecessors.
IEC 60950 applies to information
technology equipment including electrical business equipment and
associated equipment, with a rated voltage not exceeding 600 V.
It specifies requirements intended to ensure safety for the operator
and layman who may come into contact with the equipment and, where
specifically stated, for service personnel. This new publication
supersedes IEC 60380 and 60435.
Milton Cox, Secretary of TC
74, says the changes brought to this third edition are threefold.
According to Cox, "safety
requirements for products connected to telecommunication networks
have been integrated into the main body of the
document; the standard has also been rearranged to bring related
subjects together making it more user-friendly; and
finally, technical updates have been made to cover questions of
use brought up by conformity assessment bodies."
