Updated Multilingual Dictionary on CD-ROM now available from the
IEC
The International Electrotechnical Commission has
just launched the 2001 edition of its best-selling Multilingual
Dictionary on CD-ROM. New features in this second electronic edition
include a German index as well as new parts and amendments, and
a new section devoted to superconductivity.
The CD-ROM contains about 8 700 pages that contain
some 18 500 terms related to electricity, electronics and telecommunications.
Featuring easy navigation and extensive consolidated language indexes
in English, French and German, it updates the 1999 CD-ROM and should
prove to be just as popular. It offers the engineering community,
as well as industry and trade officials, the ultimate tool in electrotechnological
vocabulary. Libraries, technical colleges and translators are also
expected to benefit from this wealth of information.
The CD-ROM provides the full lexicon of electrotechnical
terms, with definitions in English and French. Equivalent terms,
without definitions, also appear in Arabic, Dutch, German, Italian,
Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. In certain
cases, full definitions also appear in Russian and Spanish.
The Multilingual Dictionary is a compilation of
the IEC 60050 series of standards (there are nearly 70 of them),
the full set of which is known as the International Electrotechnical
Vocabulary (IEV). The IEV is prepared by IEC
Technical Committee 1 (Terminology). All chapters of the IEV
are included in this edition of the Multilingual Dictionary.
The IEC is now preparing the online version of the
International Electrotechnical Vocabulary (IEV), which will be an
abridged edition of the full IEV. It is scheduled to be made available
at the end of the first quarter of 2001 as a complement to the CD-ROM.
It will list all the IEV terms in English, French and German, without
providing definitions for these terms. However, it will provide
definitions in English and French for the parts of the IEV that
deal with general concepts. This on-line facility will be available
free of charge from the IEC web site.
All the files contained in the CD-ROM are in Acrobat
PDF format. The price of the dictionary is CHF 255,00. Buyers of
the first edition on CD-ROM can obtain the upgrade for a small additional
fee.
Samples for review by specialised media are available
upon request.
